Senegal FM denies presence of Senegalese mercenaries in Abidjan

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - Senegalese Minister of Foreign Affairs Madické Niang has denied the rumour of an alleged presence of Senegalese mercenaries in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, where there is increasing armed clashes following the country's post-election crisis.

The rebuttal came in a statement issued by the ministry this weekend, after Ivorian state-run TV channel RTI reported that Senegalese mercenaries were taking part in the clashes.

Madické described the information as "unfounded", asserting that no Senegalese is involved either directly or indirectly in these clashes.

While hoping that "this brotherly country returns to peace and stability", the Senegalese minister said that "the Ivorian government should not fail in its duty to protect Senegalese citizens who have chosen as part of the African integration to live in Côte d’Ivoire and participate in its development.''
