Senegal: Turkey welcomes transfer of power to Gambian President Barrow

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – Turkey has welcomed President Adama Barrow's assumption to power as Gambia's leader following his victory in the December 2016 presidential election.

President Barrow took the oath of office in the Gambian embassy in Dakar, Senegal, last week. He had taken refuge there after former president Yahya Jammeh refused to step down peacefully though he lost the election.

''We appreciate the prudent stance shown by the Gambian people during this period which helped to prevent instability in the country,'' the Turkish government said in a statement obtained Tuesday by PANA in Dakar.

''The efforts of the mediation committee, which comprised regional leaders and established upon the initiative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) aiming to ensure a peaceful transfer of power, has set another concrete example for finding African solutions to African problems,'' the statement noted.

Jammeh has gone into exile in Equatorial Guinea.
