Senegal: Five candidates run for Francophonie presidency

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - Five candidates are seeking to succeed Abdou Diouf as Secretary-General of the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF).

The election will be held at the end of the 15th Francophonie summit scheduled for next weekend in Dakar, Senegal, according to the country's Foreign Affairs Minister, Mankeur Ndiaye.

The candidates are Mrs. Michaelle Jean (Canada), Jean-Claude de l'sstrac (Mauritius), Pierre Buyoya (Burundi), Henri Lopes (Congo) and Augustin Nze Nfumu (Equatorial Guinea).

The minister told journalists here Monday evening that three countries - Mexico, Kosovo and Costa Rica - have applied as observers at the OIF, while Madagascar has submitted its candidacy to host the 16th Francophonie Summit.

According to the programme of the 15th Summit, the 93rd meeting of the Permanent Council of the Francophonie (PCF) will be held on Tuesday and will be attended by  the advisers of the Heads of State and government responsible for the Francophonie.

The ministerial conference will be held 26-27 Nov. and will examine the Declaration and resolutions that will be submitted to the Heads of State and government.

The summit will be held under the theme: "Women and Youth in Francophonie: vectors of peace, development actors".
