Security Council reform: Libya stresses importance of unified African position
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya has stressed the importance of maintaining a unified African position on the reform of the United Nations Security Council, based on what was agreed in the Sirte Declaration and the Ezulwini Consensus.
This was stated by the Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Council of Ministers, responsible for heading the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, al-Taher al-Baour,
The Ezulwini Consensus is a position on international relations and UN reform adopted by the African Union.
It calls for a more representative and democratic Security Council in which Africa, like all other regions of the world, is represented.
Mr al-Baour's statement came during the proceedings of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Group of Ten countries of the African Union concerned with the reform of the UN Security Council and the satisfaction of the continent's request for permanent membership of the Council, held in Oyala, Equatorial Guinea, according to a government statement.
He added that, according to Libya's vision, the fragmentation of the African position in the negotiations for African countries to obtain permanent membership of the Council hinders the unification of the continent's negotiating position and weakens its effectiveness.
The African presidents affirmed the adoption of a common position by the 55 Member States of the African Union aimed at lifting the historic injustice imposed on the continent so that it can make its voice heard at the Security Council.
