Salim condemns coup attempt in Bangui

Dakar- Senegal (PANA) -- OAU Secretary General Salim Ahmed Salim on Wednesday expressed concern over atrocities committed against innocent civilians in the wake of the attempted coup in the Central African Republic and called for an "immediately" end to the violence.
In a press release, Salim expressed support for efforts aimed at restoring peace and constitutional rule in the country and urged the international community to support the legal institutions in Bangui.
He said the coup attempt contradicted the principles and decisions of the OAU about unconstitutional changes of government.
He, therefore, reiterated his firm condemnation of the use of violence as a means to settle political disputes.
Meanwhile, Salim urged the political actors in the Central African Republic to establish dialogue for a quick solution to the country's crisis "in accordance with the constitution and the principles of democracy".
