Luanda, Angola (PANA) – The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) on Friday in Luanda reiterated its support for the candidacy of Nkosasana Zuma for the chair of the African Union (AU) Commission.
SADC executive secretary, Tomaz Salomao, who was speaking at the end of the
Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government, said member countries also reviewed the electoral processes held in the region, particularly in Zambia, that led to the election of a new head of State, Michael Sata.
Salomao said the heads of State and Government also reviewed the organisation's steering plan, now with a long-term for implementation until 2050.
On the situation prevailing in Madagascar, the Summit unanimously encouraged the parties to negotiate a political solution to overcome the current crisis.
In a communique read by the SADC executive secretary, member countries decided to support the Government of Malawi to host the next African Union (AU) Summit.
The official also said the organisation had agreed a strategy for the creation of the SADC Development Fund, and that Namibia had been chosen to host the organ.
Meanwhile, the Luanda Extraordinary Summit analysed and adopted the report from the Troika held on 1 June to review the political and security situation in the region.
The summit also analysed the functioning of the organisation, the political situation in the region as a whole, the mechanisms for regional economic integration and the position to be adopted by SADC at the AU Summit.
The Troika session was attended by the presidents of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, South Africa, Jacob Zuma, Zambia, Michael Sata, and the prime minister of Tanzania, Juno Pindo, as well as the organisation's executive secretary, Salomão.
SADC groups Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Mozambique.
Madagascar has been suspended from the regional organisation on account of a coup d'etat that disrupted constitutional order there.
