Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwandan President Paul Kagame is among the African leaders attending the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, under the theme:“Investing in the Youth for a Sustainable Development”, an official source confirmed Wednesday in Kigali.

It is expected that  President Kagame, who is to take over the African Union (AU) chairmanship in 2018, will participate in working sessions and meet with a number of African Heads of State and their European Union counterparts.

At least 83 Heads of State representing 55 African countries and 28 European countries are slated to attend this high-level meeting, it said.

PANA recalls that the Rwandan leader has been in the forefront of pushing forward the ongoing efforts to make the African Union a financially independent organization as well as calls for greater continental cooperation.

Rwanda will assume the AU leadership on January 30, 2018, replacing Guinea. It will be the first time that Rwanda will lead the Union since it was founded in 2001, as a replacement to the Organization of African Unity.

Key issues to be discussed by African and European leaders at the forum include Peace and security, Investment and trade, Skills development, Job creation and Governance including democracy, human rights, migration and mobility, it said.
