Rwanda to upgrade Gisenyi domestic airport to international standard

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - The Rwandan government is planning to upgrade its domestic airport in the country’s nort westen town of Gisenyi, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to international standard by 2021, an official source revealed Monday in Kigali.

The Rwandan State Minister in charge of Transport, Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, said currently there was another plan to replace the current Kigali International airport with a new one located in Bugesera, a distrct in the South eastern Rwanda.

The Gisenyi International airport will be built on a yet to be provided land, located 160km north west of the capital, Kigali.

In the meanwhile, Uwihanganye explained that the Government has commissioned advisors to prepare a feasibility study and business plan for the project.

Currently, a separate contract between the Rwandan government and the Portuguese firm "Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construçao Africa", was signed to construct another international  airport in Bugesera (South East) under a total investment of investment of US$ 818 million.

Kigali International Airport has served up to 1.5 million passengers by the end 2017, according to the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority.
