Rwanda to install 700 additional condom dispensers in public places

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwanda's health officials plan to install 700 additional condom dispensers in the most frequently visited public places before the end of the year, in an effort to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS among young people, sources in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, told PANA Sunday.

According to the "Condom" Programme Manager within the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Andrew Gasozi Ntwali, the campaign will strengthen youth access to condoms.

"We want to reassure ourselves that the condom is available in as many places as possible countrywide (...) We wish to see its use become a reflex among young people,'' Mr. Ntwali said.

Official statistics show that Rwanda has some 190,000 individuals living with HIV/AIDS, as the country has an HIV-prevalence rate estimated at 3 per cent.

There are so far 600 condom dispensers in some public places like pubs and night clubs in the capital, Kigali, and its vicinity.
