Rwanda ratifies AfCFTA, Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and the African Passport

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - Rwanda on Saturday deposited its ratification instruments of the Agreement on the Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and the African Passport, with the African Union Commission (AUC).

The instruments were received by the Chairperson of the AUC, Moussa Faki Mahamat, from the Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo.

According to the media channel of the African Union (AU), Rwanda becomes the third member state to ratify the AfCFTA, after Ghana and Kenya, and the first to do so as far as the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and the African Passport is concerned.

Receiving the instruments, the AUC Chairperson commended Rwanda for the move, saying that it is an important step, which is a further illustration of its leaders’ commitment to the goals and ideals of the African Union.

He urges member states that have not yet done so to take the required steps to become parties to both the AfCFTA and the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and the African Passport.
