Rwanda deports Burundian policeman who illegally entered Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwandan security agents on Monday deported Burundian police officer, APC Theogene Irakoze, three days after he illegally crossed into Rwanda, a senior administrative official in the region confirmed to PANA in Kigali.

It is said that the Burundian policeman was arrested last Friday at around 18h45 local time (16h45 GMT) near the Burundian police station of Mabayi a few  minutes after he crossed into Rwandan through a porous border.

Reports said that Irakoze abandoned his border post and swam to the Rwanda side.

The handover was witnessed by senior police commanders and representative of immigration departments from both sides of the border.

In late 2017, a Burundian soldier was arrested in Rwanda for allegedly engaging in suspicious activity before being sent back to his home country.

Burundi has been in crisis since late April 2015, over President Pierre Nkurunziza’s controversial bid to stand for a third consecutive five-year term, a move branded by opponents as unconstitutional and a violation of a 2006 peace deal that ended 13 years of civil war.

At least 75,000 Burundians are currently refugees in Rwanda, according to figures from the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR).

Relations between Rwanda and Burundi have been tense after World leaders, including Rwandan President Paul Kagame, urged Nkurunziza to end his bid for a third term.
