Rwanda: Two civilians killed by unidentified attackers in southwest Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - At least two civilians were shot dead and another seriously wounded during an attack perpetrated on Saturday night by unidentified assailants near the border with Burundi, the Rwandan army said on Sunday in a statement.

"Around 0100hrs (23:00 GMT) an unidentified armed group attacked and killed 2 civilians and wounded one," the statement quoted the spokesperson of the Rwandan Army, Lt. Col Rene Ngendahimana, as saying.

The incident happened in Rusizi, a district in the southwest Rwanda. It is said that the unidentified gunmen withdrew to Burundi as the incident took place near the border with Burundi.

According to the Rwandan Army, investigations into the incident have started to establish the identity of the attackers.

This attack comes a few months after Rwandan authorities expressed worry about the possibility that the Rwandan Hutu rebels operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) could use the post-electoral violence in Burundi to destabilize Rwanda.

The tension in Burundi was sparked after president Pierre Nkurunziza decided in April 2015 to run a controversial third term in power, in violation of the constitution and the terms of a peace deal that ended the country’s 1993-2005 civil war.
