Rwanda: Trial of Rwandan opposition leader set for 9 October

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Unpreparedness of the defence side on Friday led the intermediate court in Kigali to remand Rwandan opposition leader Diane Shima Rwigara in a police jail till Monday when she will face charges related to state security and forgery.

"Since the defence is not prepared to present evidence, the court suspends trial until 9 October," said a presiding judge at Nyarugenge intermediate court. Postponement of the trial would enable the defence team to prepare their case.

According to details available at the court, Rwigara is accused of forgery because some of the names submitted by her campaign team to back her candidature for the recent presidential election were of deceased persons.

In the same case, her mother, Adeline Rwigara, and sister Anne Rwigara have been charged with incitement and "discrimination and sectarianism". All accused have been remanded in police custody.
