Rwanda: Rwandan appointed as new commander of UNAMID

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced Tuesday the appointment of Lt. General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi  of Rwanda as the new Force Commander of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), PANA reported from Kigali.

Lt.Gen Kamanzi, 51, takes over from Lt. General Paul Ignace Mella of Tanzania who is due to complete his assignment on 31 December 2015, according to an official statement made available to PANA.

It is said Kamanzi brings with him a long and distinguished career with the Rwandan military where by he has served as Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Land Force as well as Deputy Force Commander/Chief Military Observer of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) between 2006 and 2007.

Previously, Kamanzi was chief commander of Rwanda Military Academy (2009-2010). He holds a bachelor's degree in Agriculture and a Masters degree in national security strategy from US-based National Defence University.

He is the second Rwandan senior military officer to head UNAMID after Lt General Patrick Nyamvumba who held the position till March 2013.
