Rwanda: Rwandan Army search for armed men in murder of 2 civilians

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - The Rwandan Army is hunting members of an unidentified armed group that shot dead two civilians, including a 12-year-old child, in Rusizi, a district in the southwest Rwanda, near the border with Burundi.

Rwanda's Defence and Military spokesperson, Lt. Col. Rene Ngendahimana said in a statement that investigations into the incident have started to establish the identity of the attackers.

Initial investigations are focusing on the border with Burundi where the unidentified gunmen withdrew to after killing the incident, the army said.

There have been fears that Rwandan Hutu rebels operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) could use the post-electoral violence in Burundi to destabilise Rwanda.

The tension in Burundi was sparked by president Pierre Nkurunziza's decision in April 2015 to run a controversial third term in power, in violation of the constitution and the terms of a peace deal that ended the country’s 1993-2005 civil war.
