Rwanda: Rwanda police kill suspected terrorist

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwandan police on Wednesday night killed a terror suspect who injured a policeman in a shootout.

Police said the man, who was identified as Channy Mbonigaba, barricaded himself in a house at Nyarutarama, one of the wealthiest suburbs of Kigali city, and fired several shots as he resisted arrest.

This is the second terror suspect killed in seven months in the country after a young Rwandan man suspected of recruiting jihadists to join the so-called Islamic State (IS) fighters was shot dead late last January while attempting to escape from a police station in Kanombe, a suburb of Kigali city.

In a statement made available to PANA in Kigali, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) said that in Wednesday night's incident, which lasted about three hours, the suspect exchanged fire with the police, injuring one officer.

The police have since last year been investigating individuals suspected of being radicalized and linked to foreign terrorist organisations. Several of them have appeared in court.

The police assured the general public, particularly residents of the area, that the operation was over and situation was back to normal.

During recent operations carried out by Rwandan police, the arrested suspects had pledged allegiance to IS and its combatants and were directly involved in recruitment, indoctrination and enrollment of new recruits to travel to Syria for terrorist activities.
