Rwanda: EU official underlines press freedom, accountability in Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) -  Promoting a free, responsible and accountable media is a precondition for the Rwandan media self-regulatory body in defending its journalist members, the head of European Union Delegation to Rwanda Michael Ryan said Friday in Kigali.

Speaking after meeting the newly elected board of  Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), Ryan called for better media regulation and insisted on the need to improve the quality of journalism in Rwanda.

"There is a need to combat fake news and for a diverse, quality media made for a healthy, informed society," he said.

Pledging EU support for journalists, he also insisted that there was need for a better flow of information in the country.

Ryan's observation comes after the EU raised the matter of police investigation on a number of Rwandan journalists in the last few weeks.

The 2016 edition of Rwanda Media Barometer (RMB), released in December by the Rwanda Government Board (RGB), indicated that training for media practitioners was unsatisfactory both in number and content while independent and transparent regulatory system in the media licensing is still limited.
