Road crashes claim 21 lives during Christmas holiday in Zambia

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) – Twenty-one people died in separate road accidents during the Christmas holiday in Zambia, police here have disclosed.

Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said on Thursday that 139 accidents were recorded between Christmas eve and Wednesday in which 21 people died while 53 others were injured.

The capital, Lusaka, recorded the highest number of 48 road crashes, while Muchinga, Western and North Western provinces recorded the least with only four accidents.

Hamoonga said that this year’s record shows an increase by six fatal road accidents that killed eight people.

“In comparison with previous Christmas holiday of 2018, 125 road traffic accidents were recorded as compared to 139 recorded this year which shows an increase by 14 road accidents," Hamoonga added.
