Rift widens over Zionism ahead of WCAR

Johannesburg- South Africa (PANA) -- Israeli youths Tuesday stormed out of a UN Youth Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, in protest against anti-Zionism sentiment.
Delegates to the Youth meeting, two days to the opening of the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) also in Durban, included unofficial US, Israeli and Palestinian representatives.
The Israeli youths walked out when the topic of Zionism being equated to apartheid or racism came up.
Many of the delegates appeared to have equated Zionism to a new form of apartheid.
Delegates said the Youth Conference declaration was being finalised Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Israelis have made it clear that their country would not attend the World Conference Against Racism proper, which starts in Durban Friday.
The US also appears bent on carrying out its threat to boycott the Durban Conference over the issue of Zionism.
Diplomatic sources said that instead of Secretary of State Colin Powell, an official from the US embassy in South Africa would attend as an observer.
Preparations for the Conference were going ahead as planned.
