Recalcitrant Laurent Gbagbo arrested in Cote d'Ivoire

Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) – Outgoing President, Laurent Gbagbo, was reportedly arrested on Monday by the Republican Forces of Cote d'Ivoire (FRCI), according to the pro-Alassane Ouattara Television Cote d'Ivoire (TCI).

The UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (ONUCI) and the French Licorne Force have been bombarding the last bastions of Mr. Gbagbo's camp in the economic capital, Abidjan, since Sunday in order to knock out all his heavy weapons.

And early on Monday, sources said a huge ground battle began around the presidential residence where Mr. Gbagbo and some of his close relations were holed up, leading to his arrest.

Gbagbo, who lost the country's presidential runoff to Ouattara last November, refused to step down, sparking international criticisms and the current war.
