Pro-Gbagbo militias, FRCI clash in Abidjan

Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) - Heavy gunfire was heard Tuesday and Wednesday in the Yopougon district of Abidjan, where pro-Laurent Gbagbo forces continue their clash with supporters of the president-elect Alassane Ouattara, PANA learnt here.

"We did not sleep all night. We heard shots. The shooting is continuing this Wednesday," a resident of the district told PANA.

Speaking on phone, she expressed her desire to leave the town, saying weapons crackled near her home. Early on, witnesses saw people, baggage on their heads, trying to flee Yopougon which had become a battle field.

These battles are part of an operation by Republican Forces of Côte d'Ivoire (FRCI) to dismantle pro-Gbagbo militias.

Yopougon supports the ousted regime and it is the stronghold of militias who backed Gbagbo, arrested 11 April and placed under house arrest.
