President Mahama to attend ECOWAS summit

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama will attend the emergency summit of the Economic Community of West African Sates (ECOWAS) scheduled for the main Ivorian city of Abidjan to discuss the crisis in Mali.

An official statement signed by Mr John Jinapor, presidential spokesman, said President Mahama would leave for the summit on Friday to join other Heads of State from the sub-region to discuss the Malian situation where France is leading the war against Islamists who seized the whole of the north of the country in April last year and have been imposing a harsh form of sharia on the people.

The statement said the Heads of State would also formulate strategies for the speedy restoration of peace and constitutional order in Mali.

Mr. Mahama will return home on Saturday.

Several West African states are contributing troops to the force to liberate northern Mali.
