Premier Rangoolam hails women's role in Mauritius

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navin Ramgoolam, Thursday paid tribute to women in his country for their contribution to the island's progress and economic development.

"The government recognizes women as fully-fledged citizens with the same rights and dignity as men. It is a known fact that women are as capable as men, and sometimes abler than men," he declared here on the occasion of the celebration of the International Women's Day.

Highlighting his government's commitment to protect and defend women's rights, Ramgoolam said measures were being taken to guarantee greater self-reliance of women, both intellectually and professionally.

He said that women, who make up 50% of the country's population, must be encouraged to fully participate in all spheres of national life, so that they can fully develop their potentials.
