Politics: AU invites Sudan government, Darfur rebels for informal meeting

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudanese government says it has received an invitation from the African Union (AU) for an informal meeting with the rebel movements of Darfur in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on a date yet to be fixed.

Dr. Amin Hassan Omar, director of Darfur Peace Bureau, was quoted by the Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) as confirming the invitation and also as renewing the government's insistence that the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) would be the basis for any peaceful settlement to the Darfur question.

He said that the Sudan Liberation Movement of Minni Minawe (SLM/MM) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) would take part in the informal meeting. Khartoum is prepared to take part in the meeting, Omar said.

The three parties held a formal round of talks in December last year which was inconclusive.

The African union mediation led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki has resorted to informal meetings to try soften the stance of the two sides to the conflict in Darfur.
