PANAPRESS to be transformed into multi-media institution

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – The Board of Directors of PANAPRESS has announced a new direction for the Pan-African News Agency (PANA) as it is poised to be transformed into a multi-media institution.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr Ibrahim Dagash, said a roadmap had been agreed that would see a new PANA emerge at the end of a two-year period with solid credentials in News Agency, audiovisual, and other media operations.

“We have a project to undertake. We have the human resources on the continent ... we will look for the best ...we have the network and technology is available worldwide,” said Dr Dagash, a veteran Sudanese journalist and former spokesperson for the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU).

He told the English Desk in an interview on Thursday that one partner has already been identified for the visual project to commence work.

PANA commenced operations as a news agency on 25 May 1983 and had African countries, except South Africa, as contributors, in bid to produce news about Africa by Africans.

The Dakar-based media institution was a specialised agency of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU).

It was re-launched by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1993.

Dr Dagash said one objective of the new PANA project was to coordinate with the AU to build a multi-media institution that will be a communication outlet for the AU and an asset for the continent.

Meanwhile, internal restructuring will begin with staff rationalisation that places emphasis on high calibre of staff, good quality products, better work culture and conditions of service, and prudent financial management.

The restructuring will emphasise faster and better collection and dissemination of news to satisfy subscribers and the general public.

Dr Dagash said he had met with staff at the Head Office to announce to them the new dispensation that begins with a one-year transitional period as agreed at the PANA Board meeting this week.
