Opposition leader goes on trial in Nouakchott

Nouakchott- Mauritania (PANA) -- The chairman of the opposition Popular Front (FP) in Mauritania Mohamed Lemine Ch'Bih Ould Cheikh Malainine and two aides Thursday appeared before the Nouakchott criminal court on charges of "criminal conspiracy.
" Security forces were deployed in front of the courthouse and in the vicinity to hold back party militants who trooped out to follow the trial.
Lawyers defending Cheikh Malainine are challenging the very substance the charges.
They took exception to a search conducted in the FP leader's home, maintaining it was illegal.
