ONUCI willing to help new Ivorian government

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) – The special representative of the UN secretary-general for Ivory Coast, Young-Jin Choi, on Wednesday said that the UN operation in Côte d’Ivoire (ONUCI) is willing to help the government of president Alassane Ouattara.

Speaking in a video conference, he said for the time being, this  would be in the area of restoration of order and security, humanitarian assistance and human rights.

Mr Choi stressed the importance of promoting social cohesion and increasing efforts made towards national reconciliation.

Ouattara said on Wednesday that former President Laurent Gbagbo, who was arrested on Monday, had been moved from Hotel du Golfe and transferred to a villa fit for his status as a former head of state.

Mr Choi told Gbagbo on Tuesday that he would be under the protection of ONUCI which would do its best for him to be treated with dignity.
