OAU Expresses Solidarity With President Vieira

OUAGADOUGOU- Burkina Faso (PANA) -- African leaders Tuesday expressed solidarity with President Joao Bernardo Vieira of Guinea Bissau, following the reported mutiny by a group of that country's armed forces.
In a statement, the leaders condemned the attempted act of destabilisation and expressed the hope that constitutional order would return to the country without delay.
They also urged respect for legally elected institutions and called on Guineans to rally round the government of Vieira, who is not at the Ouagadougou summit, apparently because of the grave political situation in at home.
In a similar message of solidarity circulated to journalists, the 16-nation Economic Community of West African States, of which Guinea-Bissau is a member, also expressed concern at the event.
The community's executive secretary, Lansana Kouyate, plans to send a contact mission to Guinea-Bissau over the situation, the statement added.
