Nigeria: Jonathan to attend one-day ECOWAS summit on Ebola in Ghana

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) – Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will Thursday join other leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra, Ghana, for an emergency one-day Summit on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The disease continues to ravage three West African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

According to a statement released in Abuja by Nigerian presidential spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati, the emergency summit will also be attended by representatives of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation.

The summit is expected to seek greater international support and collaboration for the containment of the Ebola outbreak.

President Jonathan, who would be accompanied to the summit by acting Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan and the Director of the National Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, is expected to brief the gathering about Nigeria’s successful containment of the EVD after it entered the country in July this year through a traveller from Liberia.

The President will return to Abuja at the conclusion of the summit.
