Nigeria: Govt kick-starts efforts to establish new national carrier

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Nigeria's Federal Government has kick-started efforts to establish a new national airline, following a directive to that effect from President Muhammadu Buhari.

On Monday, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Aviation Binta Bello inaugurated a 12-member panel on the establishment of a national carrier.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the Permanent Secretary urged the committee to pursue the assignment with the sense of urgency it deserves.

“The establishment of a national carrier is not only justified by economic considerations, but also strategic national interest, national pride and job creation potential,” the Ministry said.

The committee is headed by a former Managing Director of Discovery Airlines, Mohammed Abdulsalam.

The former national carrier, Nigeria Airways, ceased operations in 2003, after 45 years of its existence.
