Nigeria: ECOWAS condoles with Sierra Leone over Pres. Kabbah

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - ECOWAS Commission President Kadre Desire Ouedraogo has expressed ''shock and sadness'' at the the passing away of the former President of Sierra Leone, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, at the age of 82

''On behalf of the community, I wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family and the government and people of Sierra Leone as they mourn a great son of West Africa. I also urge the people of Sierra Leone to build on the legacy of the late President,'' the ECOWAS Commission President said.

He said, in a statement by the Commission, made available to PANA here Tuesday, that the former President would be fondly remembered for successfully leading the country at a very delicate period in its history when he had to deploy his vast experiences in the UN system in managing the country’s economic challenges and political upheaval.

''The region recalls with a sense of pride his adroit handling of the country’s civil war when he guided the nation through the process of national reconciliation and recovery after a debilitating civil war.

''By his death, Sierra Leone and indeed the region has lost a statesman who by his exemplary leadership contributed, along with other West African leaders, towards the strengthening of democracy in our region,'' the statement said.
