The presidency said in a statement that in the telephone conversation, President Buhari described the re-election as a "major victory for democracy’’.

It said the President also praised Ivorians for the peaceful conduct of the election, noting that it was a clear indication that the people of the West African country are prepared to live with one another in peace and harmony.

President Buhari, who called President Ouattara on Monday night, also said his re-election for a second five-year term was an opportunity to continue leading Cote d'Ivoire along the path to greatness, in peace and tranquility.

Buhari wished his Ivorian counterpart a successful second term in office.

Last month, President Ouattara, 73, was re-elected with almost 84 percent of the votes in the first round of polls.
