Niger launches HIV/AIDS sensitisation campaign

Niamey- Niger (PANA) -- Niger has launched an information and sensitisation campaign on HIV/AIDS with officials urging the press and NGOs to join efforts at educating the public on preventive measures.
The campaign dubbed "Africa, Wake Up" rolled off last Wednesday advocating the use of condoms as a preventive measure, while encouraging society to accept rather than stigmatise HIV/AIDS patients.
The campaign is also advocating fidelity between couples while calling for voluntary screening against HIV infection.
The campaign was launched with the support of the Education and Development Academy (AED) and USAID.
UNAIDS estimates the number of HIV carriers in Niger at 65,000.
