Niger govt. bans use of plastic bags

Niamey, Niger (PANA) – The Niger government on Tuesday banned the production, importation, usage and stocking of low density smooth plastic and packaging bags.

"Plastic bags are the most serious threat to the environment," according to an official communiqué issued at the end of a meeting of the council of ministers.

It said that plastic wastes block drainages and prevents the free flow of waste water and other wastes, adding that when such plastic wastes are consumed by animals, it could cause serious gastro-intestinal trouble and sometimes death when human beings eat meat from such animals.

It said that several initiatives have been taken by the government, the territorial authorities, the NGOs and development associations and partners to end the situation.

"But it’s worth noting that despite the initiatives, the situation still persists," the government said in the communique.

It announced that in the alternative, government would encourage the production and importation of bags made of biodegradable materials which can withstand extreme temperatures, are durable and easy to use.
