Niger assembles data on HIV/AIDS status

Niamey- Niger (PANA) -- For the first time since embarking on the fight against HIV/AIDS in 1996, Niger has released data on the actual situation of the pandemic, sources close to the National Programme on AIDS (PNLS) affirmed Wednesday in Niamey.
The information, compiled from a survey, situates the extent of the disease in Niger and highlights factors underlying its spread, as well analyses its impact on the country.
"Now that the situation has been analysed," said PNLS director Kadri Mounkaila, "PNLS will get down to working out an appropriate response to the situation.
" A broad-based meeting is envisaged to discuss possible strategies against the scourge, Col.
Mounkaila hinted.
Observers note that Niger lags behind in terms of short- and medium-term strategizing against HIV/AIDS.
