Niger adopts new strategy for sustainable food security

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - Niger will mobilize FCFA 1,000,800,000,000, during the period 2011-2015, to fund the initiative -- "3N" or "Nigeriens Nourish Nigeriens" -- which was adopted after a cabinet meeting held here Thursday, according to an official source.

The "3N" project, which is aimed at ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural development, supersedes previous policies and strategies for agricultural development and food security, the source indicated.

It said that the "3N" initiative is a reference for collaboration between government and other stakeholder groups, such as technical and financial partners, the NGOs, socio-professional organizations and associations.

Under the project, Niger government officials and partners will be called to a round table at which funding will be ironed out.

Being a Sahel country, plagued by virtually structural food crises, Niger is under threat of a new food shortage that affects nearly 5 million people out of its 16 million inhabitants.
