Niger Health minister hails efforts to fight AIDS

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - Niger's health minister, Hassan Nouhou, on Wednesday in Niamey hailed the efforts made by his country in the fight against the HIV and AIDS pandemic.

Speaking on the occasion of the celebration World AIDS Day, he said in addition to the treatment received by people living with HIV and AIDS, the country had 404 sites for the fight against mother-to-child transmission.

'The respect of human rights recommends that more efforts should be made to follow up people living with HIV and AIDS in our country," Mr Nouhou said.

He called on stakeholders from all sectors to intensify sensitisation for responsible behaviour of citizens particularly young men.

Statistics indicate that 6,574 people living with AIDS received anti-retroviral treatment in 2009. About 0.7% of the 15-49 age bracket suffer from AIDS.

The country has a prevalence rate of 5% within pregnant women while 60% of prostitutes are positive.
