Niger: Niger urges UNESCO to extend support to education, sciences and culture

Niamey, Niger (PANA) – Despite UNESCO’s multiple interventions in in several domains in Niger, challenges still remain in the sectors of education, sciences, culture and communications, the Nigerien minister of Foreign affairs and Cooperation, Ibrahim Yacoubou, said on Wednesday evening during a meeting with the UNESCO Chief, Irina Bokova, who is on a visit to the country.

To take up these challenges, "Niger still needs UNESCO’s technical and financial support, especially on the implementation of its policies", said Yacoubou who announced that Niger was fully committed to the orientations and main lines of Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals which aims to ensure equitable, inclusive and quality education and learning for life and for all, by 2021.

Bokova is on a 48-hour visit to Niger to strengthen cooperation for peace and sustainable development between UNESCO and Niger.

In talks with five Nigerien government officials, including the Ministers of Education, Higher Education, Research and Innovation, she was hailed for UNESCO's interventions in Niger

However, they urged UNESCO to do more.
