Niger: Govt. bans production, import, trade, use of plastic bags

Niamey, Niger (PANA ) - Niger's Parliament on Wednesday passed a bill banning the production, import, trade and use of plastic bags in the West African country.

It said the use of light density plastic bags had huge negative consequences as they damaged the environment, fauna and flora.

Parliament said those consequences were negative on agriculture and livestock farming through the reduction of output on cultivated and cultivable areas and the killing of 36% of the livestock in countries of the Sahel sub-region.

The bill was submitted to Parliament two years ago but was faced with pressures from interested parties.

There is a six-month moratorium for producers and the holders of low density plastic bags and packages in the country to comply with the new law.
