Niger: EU to help Niger to achieve food security

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - The European Union (EU) says it will help Niger in its efforts toward food security, with a particular focus on the need to improve the efficiency of aid by concentrating on vulnerable people.

EU's representative in Niamey Raul Mateus Paula gave the assurance in an interview published by the government newspaper ''Le Sahel Dimanche'' Friday.

Last year, the EU gave US$30 million to Niger to help the African country's quest for food security, Paula said.

Nigerien Prime Minister Brigi Rafini met with the country's partners Thursday to assess the results of the 2014 agricultural campaign and the measures envisaged to face the shortage in cereals and fodder.

It is reported that the 2013 agricultural campaign ended with a cereal shortage of 343,566 tonnes and a fodder deficit of more than 6.7 million tonnes.

A total of 3,617 villages with a population of  4,122,770 inhabitants have been identified as having crop shortage because of floods.

The government has set up a plan to address the situation.
