Niamey, Niger (PANA) - Security ministers from ECOWAS member states met here Wednesday to discuss the entry into circulation of the biometric national identity card in the Community.

In an opening  speech, the Nigerien Home Minister, Massoudou Hassoumi, stated that the meeting was aimed at making an irreversible march towards integration in West Africa.

According to him, the free movement of persons is one of the objectives of ECOWAS and it represents the real support of a socio-economic and political integration.

''The free movement of people represents a challenge because it encourages, at national and regional levels, the circulation of goods, expertise and finance which are the essential pillars of the regional political and socio-economic integration'', he added.

He pointed that the biometric identity card, as envisioned, also provides security for the free movement of persons within ECOWAS member countries.
