New emergency contraceptive for African women

Dakar- Senegal (PANA) -- Norlevo, an emergency contraceptive pill, will be available in at least five French-speaking African countries from January 2003, it was announced here Wednesday.
The pill is used in several European countries and it is sold without prescription in France.
A regional workshop preparing for the launch of the contraceptive in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Congo (Brazzaville), Guinea and Morocco started Wednesday in Dakar.
The Senegalese Association for Family Welfare (ASBEF) said in a press statement that participants of the workshop would look into conditions for distribution of the contraceptive through specialised non-governmental organisations in the selected countries.
Emergency contraception is used to prevent unwanted pregnancy and risky abortion, but also as a loss-leader in promoting use of contraceptives.
