Nationalised bank in Côte d’Ivoire opens

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (PANA) – The International Bank for Trade and Industry in Côte d’Ivoire (BICICI), the Ivorian subsidiary of the French bank BNP Paribas, which was nationalised by the government of Laurent Gbagbo, opened one branch for business on Wednesday.

The opening of other branches will follow suit in the days to come, Mr Gbagbo’s Minister of the Economy and Finance, Désiré Dallo, said. There is a ceiling on withdrawals.

BICICI, just like a many banks operating in Côte d’Ivoire, was closed on 14 February on grounds of "technical and security-related problems”.

M. Gbagbo’s government then decided "to take full and complete stake in the capital," of the bank where the accounts of many state-employed civil servants are established.
