NEC directs political parties to submit lists of nominated candidates for parliamentary election

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwanda's National Electoral Commission (NEC) has asked all registered political parties to submit their list of nominated candidates in order of priority ahead of the parliamentary polls to be held 2-3 September, 2018, an official source confirmed Monday to PANA in Kigali.

The source said, however, that only three parties have approved their list of candidates to contest in the upcoming polls.

The trio are the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), the Social Democratic party (PSD, french acronym) and the opposition Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR), the electoral commission said.
Rwanda is set to organise parliamentary elections from 2 to 4 September to elect all the 80 members of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house, for a five-year term.

The source said that the parties are supposed to submit their lists from 12 to 25 July, and the approved candidates will be unveiled on 6 August.

Electioneering campaigns will take place between 13 August and 1 September, ahead of the parliamentary polls.

As was the case in 2003 and 2013, some political parties have announced their intention to form a coalition under the umbrella of the ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF).

These are the Rwandan Socialist Party (PSR), Democratic Union of the Rwandan People (UDPR), Party for Progress and Concord (PPC) and Centrist Democratic Party (PDC).

Phillipe Mpayimana, who ran independently in the 2017 presidential contest, has announced his bid for a parliamentary seat in the upcoming election, again as an independent candidate.

Of the 80 members of the Lower Chamber of Parliament, women account for 64 percent.
