Mozambican advert companies urged to respect consumers

Maputo- Mozambique (PANA) -- The Mozambican government Monday urged advertising companies to respect the rights of consumers and avoid making deceitful claims.
Speaking at the opening of Maputo's Third International Festival of Advertising, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ana Maria Raquel , declared that advertising companies should use this form of communication to pr o mote "ethical and moral values".
Raquel claimed that the greatest challenge facing advertising companies was to s atisfy the needs of consumers.
"The challenge is to respond to the desires of the population, informing them wh ere they can find what they need", she said.
"Advertising companies should draw up and distribute correctly information for t he communities.
They must obey the principle of respect for consumers' rights," s he said.
Festival chairperson Jose Braganca told the Mozambican News Agency (AIM) that ev ent was paying particular attention to the need to consolidate a common platform in the area of advertising, marketing and communication for the countries of the SADC (Southern African Development Community) and of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries).
The message to be transmitted at the festival, he said, was the need to train ad vertising professionals, so that they would work in a more professional manner, r especting ethics and other regulations established in the advertising code.
"Advertising is a science because you need to know the techniques for producing adverts", he stressed.
"Advertising is communication and persuasion, and a perso n who doesn't have the knowledge can't do that".
The Festival will end Wednesday.
