Accra- Ghana (PANA) -- Some 107 more Liberian refugees in Ghana flew back home on Thursday under a UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) assisted programme.
Their departure brought to 1,724, the total number of Liberians repatriated from Ghana this year under a programme involving the UNHCR, the governments of Ghana and Liberia, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The UNHCR said in a statement that a Nigerian-based Changchagi Airline, which left Accra to Monrovia, was chartered for the vulnerable refugees - mainly those with medical conditions, unaccompanied children, the elderly and physically challenged persons.
The UN agency said it would continue the twice monthly sea and air repatriation of Liberian refugees willing to return home.
On the whole, some 4,206 Liberians have left Ghana under the voluntary repatriation programme following the end of the civil war in their country in 2003.
