South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela, a 1993 Nobel Peace winner, was approached and accepted to participate in the programme, the Mint's representative, Magne Flagan said in a statement Monday.
"It is fitting that the Mint of Norway is involved in this project because the people of Norway have been long standing supporters of a just South Africa.
"The fact that this medallion initiative forms part of an international programme adds to its stature; we anticipate that there will be many more initiatives to help the Nelson Mandela Foundation achieve its goal of a better SA," Flagan added.
He said Mandela's granddaughters - Swati and Dorothy - received the cheque on behalf of the Foundation at a low-key ceremony recently in Johannesburg.
