Minister says humanitarian situation improving in Darfur

Khartoum- Sudan (PANA) -- Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail affirmed here Monday that the security and humanitarian situation in Sudan's strife-torn western Darfur region was improving steadily.
In a press statement the minister, who recently paid a 3-day visit to the largely desert region said a UN mission which equally toured Darfur would on Friday update UN secretary general Kofi Annan on its findings.
Last Saturday, the UN mission urged the authorities in Khartoum to accelerate efforts to control pro-government militias in Darfur and to provide security and protection for displaced people, as well as facilitate humanitarian access.
Meanwhile, an Arab League delegation is due in Darfur for a firsthand appraisal of developments in the troubled region.
