Melania Trump to visit Africa in October

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) – Melania Trump has confirmed that she will visit South Africa on her first trip to the continent as First Lady in October.

Her office said she is planning to address issues that African children face. She recently launched a US-based effort focused on the well-being of children.

She plans to travel without President Donald Trump who has adopted a hard line stance towards the continent, particularly with regard to trade related matters. Trump also came under fire earlier this year when lawmakers quoted him as referring to “shit-hole” African countries. He denied making the disparaging remarks.

"This will be my first time travelling to Africa and I am excited to educate myself on the issues facing children throughout the continent, while also learning about its rich culture and history. We are a global society and I believe it is through open dialogue and the exchanging of ideas that we have a real opportunity to learn from one another,” she said in a statement received by PANA.

The dates and other African destinations are yet to be confirmed.
