Mauritius launches campaign to collect plastic bottles

Port-Louis- Mauritius (PANA) -- Mauritian Environment ministry and the Mauritian Soft Drinks Bottlers Association Wednesday launched Wednesday at Flic-en-Flac, a tourist resort 20 km west of the capital, a campaign to collect used plastic bottles for recycling.
Environment minister Rajesh Bhagwan said plastic bottles could not be totally eliminated in the Indian Ocean island- nation.
"That's why we have chosen to recycle them", he added.
According tot Bhagwan, the dumping of plastic wastes had reached alarming proportions in Mauritius.
"We should at all cost prevent this bomb to explode by changing our bad habits.
This cannot be done in a day but we would persevere in our attempt to change the bad habits of Mauritians", Bhagwan said.
Thirty big dustbins would be installed in several parts of the island for the collection of plastic bottles that would later be exported for recycling in neighbouring countries.
